Root Canal Treatment
What Is Root Canal Treatment?
Root canal treatment is a common dental procedure used to treat and save a tooth that is badly decayed, infected, or has died. Rather than removing the tooth entirely, this treatment allows us to preserve your natural tooth structure.
The procedure involves carefully removing the infected or damaged nerve (pulp) inside the tooth, thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting the root canals, and then filling and sealing them to prevent future infection.
Why Might You Need a Root Canal?
Root canal treatment is often necessary when the inner part of the tooth (the pulp) becomes inflamed or infected due to:
- A deep cavity or large filling
- A cracked or fractured tooth
- Trauma to the tooth (even if there’s no visible damage)
Without treatment, the infection can spread, causing pain, swelling, and potentially leading to tooth loss.
Is Extraction an Alternative?
In some cases, a severely damaged tooth may need to be removed and replaced with a dental implant, bridge, or denture. However, whenever possible, saving your natural tooth is the preferred option, as it helps maintain your natural bite and prevents bone loss in the jaw.
